What is bluetooth? People with cellphones always are asking if you have bluetooth. I'm going to get a cellphone and I need to know what it is. What does it do? Does it come with the phone or do you have to buy it?
Any other info is greatly appreciated!
10 points to the person who explains it the best!!

To put it simply, Bluetooth is a form of connectivity that is built into phones, so yes, it comes with the phone. It does not cost any extra and is free to use. It is used to connect with other devices that have Bluetooth, for example other cell phones, some computers etc. Once the two devices are connected via Bluetooth (or "paired"), files such as music or pictures can be sent between the two. The devices must also be fairly close to each other (I think the maximum distance is around 10 metres) for Bluetooth to connect.

Bluetooth is a private wireless channel that is built into some phones that allows for wireless pairing between two bluetooth enabled devices. You can use bluetooth to connect two bluetooth enabled devices like a headset, a computer, a printer, etc. The main usage of BT on cell phones right now is to create a pairing between a headset and a phone (thus you see those people with those Star Trekish things on their ears, which are usually sold separately from the phone).

As a previous poster mentioned, not all Bluetooth is equal. The reason for that is something called bluetooth 'profiles.' These are the things that tell each BT device which services each BT can do (ie: you cannot stream music through a bluetooth headset on some phone, and you might not always be able to have two phones connect to each other).

Where technology is nowadays, BT is cheaper off ebay, but sometimes when you buy the phone it is included (just ask). And remember that when buying a BT headset for a phone, there are four things to consider:

1. Battery life

2. How comfortable it is to use and to wear

3. Audio quality

4. How important is it to have the headset?

Hope that helps, best of luck!

How Bluetooth Works

by Julia Layton and Curt Franklin

When you use computers, entertainment systems or telephones, the various pieces and parts of the systems make up a community of electronic devices. These devices communicate with each other using a variety of wires, cables, radio signals and infrared light beams, and an even greater variety of connectors, plugs and protocols.

The art of connecting things is becoming more and more complex every day. In this article, we will look at a method of connecting devices, called Bluetooth, that can streamline the process. A Bluetooth connection is wireless and automatic, and it has a number of interesting features that can simplify our daily lives.

When any two devices need to talk to each other, they have to agree on a number of points before the conversation can begin. The first point of agreement is physical: Will they talk over wires, or through some form of wireless signals? If they use wires, how many are required -- one, two, eight, 25? Once the physical attributes are decided, several more questions arise:

How much data will be sent at a time? For instance, serial ports send data 1 bit at a time, while parallel ports send several bits at once.

How will they speak to each other? All of the parties in an electronic discussion need to know what the bits mean and whether the message they receive is the same message that was sent. This means developing a set of commands and responses known as a protocol.

Bluetooth offers a solution to the problem.

Why is it called Bluetooth?

Harald Bluetooth was king of Denmark in the late 900s. He managed to unite Denmark and part of Norway into a single kingdom then introduced Christianity into Denmark. He left a large monument, the Jelling rune stone, in memory of his parents. He was killed in 986 during a battle with his son, Svend Forkbeard. Choosing this name for the standard indicates how important companies from the Nordic region (nations including Denmark, Sweden, Norway and Finland) are to the communications industry, even if it says little about the way the technology works.

Most people will just cut and paste the answer from Wikipedia, but the short answer is that BlueTooth is a wireless networking protocol that creates a virtual private network between multiple wireless devices.

Basically if you have a BT phone and purchase a wireless headset you can synch the two devices onto a private network (secured against intrusion and peeping) so that the headset can communicate wirelessly with the phone. This is not the extent of the application of BlueTooth since it can form a larger network with any BT-enabled device.

Think of BT as a method of tying multiple devices together into a safe, secure wireless network with minimal setup.

Not all Bluetooth is created equal.

1. used to transfer files device to device

2. handsfree calling using small ear piece

3. listening to music through stereo bluetooth headset.

Bluetooth gives you the capability of downloading contacts, pictures, etc from the phone onto your computer. Also if you want an earbud you have to have bluetooth. The phone comes with everything you need.
