Question:
DROID X (Google Phones) Mobile Hotspot/USB Tethering?

A couple of years ago or so, I was unable to create a mobile hotspot via my DROID X without having to pay money to Verizon. Now, I noticed that I am able to make a mobile hotspot under the settings Tethering and Mobile Hotspot.

Question: Am I being charged or has there been a Mobile Hotspot (Free) feature added?

My theory: Maybe, when my phone updated to Google Play (etc...), this feature was added allowing me to create a free mobile hotspot?

Thanks!

If you have a tiered capped data plan, Mobile Hotspot is already included.... no extra fees

If you have the grandfathered unlimited data plan, like me, you will still eb charged for mobile hotspot..... BUT, like me, you can use FoxFi (rooting is NOT needed!) or PDANet to wire USB tether and/or wireless mobile hotspot for free.. no charge... and "they" cant detected it.

Verizon will still be allowed to charge for tethering on customers with grandfathered unlimited data accounts (but since it can’t detect the tethering apps anymore, that doesn’t really matter.) Verizon’s recent tiered data plans already include free tethering, so the carrier likely saw this settlement coming for a while. The news mainly affects Android, as iOS and Windows Phone don’t have legitimate third-party tethering apps in their app stores.

No carriers offer free mobile hotspots, they all make you pay extra.

Remember, just because the phone has a particular feature doesn't mean it's free if you use it. After all, if you have a plan that doesn't include texting (they do exist), you can still use texting on your phone, and when you do, Verizon will happily charge you for it!

There IS a way to get a mobile hotspot for free - root your phone, and then install a mobile hotspot app that does it.

I bought a brand new one not too long ago. My historic one would slip out of my palms as a minimum a few times a day, and the paint used to be chipped off the sides; however it used to be an particularly tough phone. It as soon as fell into the drain for the rainwater when I used to be ready for the tuition bus, and that i left it there and retrieved it in the afternoon with a fishing internet.
