I'm paying for a internet and the recent months it has been so slow and poor. It's normally around 0.4mps etc highest at about 0.12 which is dreadful and then today BT send me a bill for £50.

I don't feel that I should pay for this terrible service and a service I haven't been receiving. They have on record that I've complained and rang in the past and done diagnosis tests before yet no improvement.

What can I do?

Thanks guys

BT are awful for internet (and for phone lines too I think but there's not much choice than to use BT for that). Go with Be Unlimited, by far the best broadband available. Don't be tempted by companies saying you'll get better speeds like Virgin because they're a heap of crap, only Be don't throttle and they definitely offer the best service.

Some people are going with BT because they want the new fibre service but I'll wait until Be have it.

The problem in the majority of these cases lies with Openreach who are the engineering company responsible for the exchanges. Most network faults can be resolved by speaking to the technical help department of which ever company you're with, be it BT, Talk Talk, Sky, etc. But if the fault or speed issues you're experiencing are to do with the exchange, then they have to be fixed by Openreach who work for all of the providers (except Virgin). Unfortunately, switching providers would not resolve these issues. And because Openreach are in high demand, many slow speed complaints go unresolved.

But it's not fair to continue paying for a service that you're not getting. I'm assuming that you're now out of contract...and I'm also assuming that you've previously had better speeds from this line. If that is the case then my suggestion would be to order a new package (with a new line fitted) and cancel your existing account afterwards. It's the fastest way to get an engineer out for free because if you order a new line and BB, there is no installation charge. When the engineer comes out you can ask him just to route the line through the existing socket or you can have a totally separate socket installed. But a brand new line would mean that any problems would not be carried over. In most cases, slow speeds are just down to old wiring. Once the line is active, you could cancel your existing account and even have the old number swapped to the new line if you wanted.

In response to all of the other answerers saying how rubbish BT are, they are the most reliable provider in the UK. I had an issue with my broadband speeds with them previously and thought that moving to Talk Talk would resolve it. Biggest mistake of my life! When I switched back, I had a new line fitted and it done the trick!

I agree with the above answerer, we have BT only because Virgin Media doesn't service our area. Their service is p*ss poor, what you should do is call customer services and threaten either 1) To leave and switch provider, 2) To sue them over "breach of contract" and keep annoying them until they eventually fix the problem.

Change provider, BT are useless and will never improve their service no matter what.
