Alright, i'm a college student on my parent's AT&T family plan, and I want an iPhone. But, $30/mo for internet and data plan seems ridiculous to me! I went to the AT&T store and the woman said to me, "You HAVE to get the data plan with any iPhone. Besides it's pointless to get one without it!".... I have also seen similar questions, and answers, on Yahoo! Answers. And my response to those answers is don't be so ignorant and narrow minded. First off, I DONT HAVE MONEY as a college student to pay $30/mo extra! - if i can get the best phone in the world for cheaper than a lot of other phones, why not?!?!... Second, i CAN use the internet features (FOR FREE!) since i spend all my time in a university with an almost unlimited number of wifi hot spots, including in my dorm! So there is my argument. Anyway, I was wondering if I were to get my hands on one, would my 3G sim card activate it and have it work properly? (without the AT&T data plan... of course)?

The data plan is mandatory. You can't buy the phone at retail without it. If you buy an iPhone on the secondary market and put your 3g sim card in it, AT&T will detect iPhone usage and automatically add the data program.

There are a few things you can try.

Order the plan, wait and then cancel it...so you only have to pay for one month, but then many of the features will stop working.

Order it, pay once and find someone to unlock the phone for you...then you still don't get all the special features, but you have the phone.

Try looking for the Hi-phone or Ci-Phone. They can be used with AT&T, without having to pay for the internet features. Just be careful, because you have to order them from China or India usually.
