12 Year old in need of phone. SHE DOES NEED IT - she goes to secondary school and when she goes home she goes alone on the public transport, when she goes to friend's houses she sometimes makes her own way there and anyway her parents can't always take her to places, therefore the london buses are like her main source of travel lol :P Either way, her mum wants her to have one (makes her feel safe). She already has a phone but she'd like a new one. Her current one is very basic. She also has trouble typing texts as it's not QWERTY. She's getting used to it but she HAS had it a while and it takes her a minute or so per word. At least, that's what she says.
I'd like to get her a phone for her birthday in September, or at least recommend a phone or something.
It should have:
* LONG battery life
* Wifi or 3G
* Some kind of game or entertainment
* a full QWERTY keyboard
OPTIONAL:
* Touchscreen
* Camera
* NOT chunky or wide or anything that makes you feel awkward because it's bigger than you. (She didn't tell me that but i had something similar and its SO annoying)

**VERY VERY VERY IMPORTANT!!** - She travels overseas a lot and so some kind of communications for overseas is nice to but NOT the orange sim card as she's already on a contract that her parents are happy with.

PRICE - I don't mind the price. If it's quite expensive but worth it, fine, i'll risk it *sighs* or i'll fund her half the money or something. But TRY and keep it with a low price, PLEASE!!

ALSO - This phone will probably be with her until she's sixteen or seventeen as her family isn't the type to spoil their daughter like that.

Hello!

So, you want to get a phone that has a good battery life, that has many connectivity options, one that's good for games and one with a full QWERTY. And no bar phones? The "No bar phones" request narrows your selection down, but I think that I can still help.

First of all, remember that it's not always the phone that's expensive, but also the plan. A plan with all this would cost a lot, over 50 pounds a month for sure, so be careful. Now, it looks like your daughter wants a smartphone. Smartphones have more features than basic phones, like improved web browsing, Wifi and 3g, better cameras, email, better keypads, etc... So as you can see, they do things a lot better. Now, smartphones usually only come in bar factors, but there is one that doesn't.

It's the Blackberry Pearl Flip. It's a smartphone, but it's small, and shaped like a normal flip phone. Here's the web page to it:

http://uk.blackberry.com/devices/blackberrypearl8200/pearl_features.jsp

I don't live in the UK (Assuming that you live in London England), but I think that they offer it there. You said not to find one on Orange. I looked on Vodaphone and they said that they didn't carry it, but I think that O2 does. They sell the flip 8220. The 8220 doesn't feature 3G, but is does feature WiFi, so you can browse the web faster. It comes in many colours, it has a 1.3 mp camera, a trackball for better navigation, a battery that can last up to 14 days on standby (Or 4 hours of talk time), access to the Blackberry app world where she can get many games for free or for a fee, built in games, great web browsing on the go and a fair sized QW ER TY keyboard. Now, why did I spell QWERTY QW ER TY (with spaces every 2 letters)? It's because it uses Blackberry's Sure-Type key style (Or Compact QWERTY). It's the same as a normal QWERTY, but it has 2 letters per key. After about 15 minutes, it becomes very easy to use. I hate T9 and ABC keypads but I like QWERTY keypads, but I like small phones. This is where sure-type comes into play. It's used on smaller phones, and is very east to type with.

This phone isn't the best if you want to go overseas, but if you want a "World phone" (Optimized for overseas traveling) I'd recommend the Samsung Ace or the Blackberry tour. Unfortunately, these are both bar phones, and may not be what you're looking for.

I'd just like to make a final not to say that Blackberries aren't just for business. They make great phones for work, or play. The 8220 is more for play. Their Pearl, Pearl flip and Curve series are great fun.

I hope that I helped your daughter find a new phone!

The obvious answer would be the Blackberry Curve 8520 ;) On virgin you can get the phone for FREE on a 20 pound a month contract where you also get 200 mins unlimited texts + unlimited internet (Wi-Fi) and unlimited Blackberry data service. And if you do decide to get her that one tell the person at Virgin about her traveling and they will turn roaming on ;) As a Virgin Mobile customer i can tell you they are great and there oversea charges are extremely reasonable :) Keep in mind if you have the cash buy the Bold 9700 its a tad more expensive but for what she needs the Curve is fine. And battery life on them are great too. Hope this helps.

EDIT: If your not from the UK all of the Curve 8520 deals are really cheap anyway ;)

Consider the Nokia E72 or E71 as well.

Has all the should have features you are looking for as well as camera and is not chunky.

* She can look around for new games or entertainment from the phone itself via the Ovi store.

* Their Ovi Maps application is quite good. As long as she has a map of the country she's going to downloaded, she can pretty much see her location on a map without using 3G data.

You should try the Motorala Quench

Motorola QUENCH is an Android powered handset. It sports a 5MP camera, 3.1” HVGA display, GPS, touch sensitive buttons, and the social networking themed interface MOTOBLUR.
