I've previously asked if anyone else had problems with this phone? The phone crashes etc but at the moment the touch buttons are not working at all therefore i cannot use the handset.
A nice guy answered my question and gave me help, saying i should try update the firmware.

My question is, how do i update the firmware and what one will it be or how will i find out? I really thought i should be sure incase i break the phone all together.

Thanks in advance x

To update the firmware on a SE phone all that you need is the DCU60 cable that came with the phone and the SE Updater Tool that you can download from the SE website. You need to go into this update thing with your eyes open though. The Updater Tool is infamous. In some cases your phone will be totally renewed and in other cases it will become a brick. If you brick it, it can still be recovered but the process is a lot more complicated and involves flashing.

It could also turn out that your phone already has the latest firmware installed so the Updater Tool would do nothing for you. If that's the case, then it's time to reflash your phone.

I have had problems with my k850i and a firmware upgrade will not always help.

Take it back to the shop or contact your network operator if it is a contract phone and they will repair it free of charge (mine is in the shop and i have to wait 28 days to get it back). While the phone is getting repaired they will do the firmware update for you.

I was chatting to the manager of the network shop i took my phone to and she said that there are problems with k850i phones including the touchscreen problem that you are describing and she said a proper repair should fix it.

If you do decide to do the firmware upgrade i advise you to back everything up to the memory card (if you have 1 if not create a file on your pc to store everything) as you will lose everything. You will lose your phone contacts, text messages, notes, memos and anything else stored on the phone. It resets your phone and you have to change all the settings back afterwards (i did the firmware upgrade so i know from experience).

Good luck and i hope this helps.

Updating firmware might not be the best thing to do if you don't have experience and proper tools(connection cables and software). If not done properly you could damage the software on the phone and it will not run at all. I would suggest to call your carrier customer support or even better take it to the dealer shop where you got it and they can test it and certainly do the update if needed. Also your phone might be under warranty or insurance so you might be eligible for a new one. You also might want to look into upgrading to a new one with contract extension (if eligible), check out free phone upgrades available from the carriers at this moment (link below). Hope this helps.
