Why am I getting "Error Invalid Number" when sending text message with iphone?

Question

I only get this message when I initiate the conversation. I can reply to people with no problem. But when I try to text someone first, I get "Error Invalid Number: Please re-send using a valid 10 digit mobile # or valid short code." Well...they are valid #'s, one was my mom's and she was sitting right next to me, and what the hell is a short code? I've tried putting the area code in front of the number..no luck. I've tried 1+area code...still no luck. I have a text message plan so that shouldn't be the problem. I paid a small fortune for this phone and it should be able to send texts without a problem!

shannon if your dialing the area code and the phone number and still getting the error message then the message center number is probably incorrect.

Its the number the phone sends the message to so it can be delivered.

Call customer care 1-800-331-0500 from any phone BUT the one your having trouble with. I think you will need to get to Apple care but start with ATT care first!

I have done all the suggested fixes with no resolve. I called ATT who blamed Apple, then called Apple who stayed on the phone with ATT(they didn't blame Apple in this conversation) ended that ATT decides I have put in a "ticket " at AT&T they will get back to me in 5 business days. Next day I get at text "issue resolve" so I call the number it gives me. They tell me this is an ongoing issue with Apple(the blame game again) and I can try different things but no specific recommended resolve. He goes onto say if I go to the Apple store they can do a back up so they can find where the number is being stored as a 7 digit instead of 10 digit so it can be removed. The Apple store is and hour away from me and I'm not sure if I drive there that it will fix this problem. I thing I have found it this problem has been ongoing for several years as far back as 2010 I have found comments about it so you would think that someone would address it.

I had this same problem with my IPhone with it did a spontaneous upgrade back in January. I have since gotten a new phone and I am still having the issue and I switched to droid.

it is a problem in the settings of your phone and/or the phone your sending the text to. There is nothing wrong with your phone. You don't have to reboot or restore. Check your settings & have the person you are sending to check their settings.
