My sister gave me her android smart phone to use for just the internet! If i don't have a phone carrier should the microSD card still work?

The external storage or microSD card i put in was not recognized! Is it because of not having a phone carrier or just a malfunction in the phone? As i said, I'm using it for internet & music!

What's the make and model of the phone?
There are different types of SD card:-
SD is the oldest (evolved from MMC if you want to be precise) and had a maximum capacity of 1GB. The SD standard later allowed for up to 4GB but I've never seen a 4GB version and the 2GB versions often didn't work on older devices.
SDHC came next and started at 2GB with a maximum capacity of 32GB. In reality you'll never see a 2GB version as I don't think they were ever manufactured.
SDXC is the latest standard ranging from 64GB up to 2TB.
All three types are the same size, shape and thickness and all three are available in micro sizes. But they're not backwards compatible on older devices. So if you're trying to microSDXC or microSDHC on a device only designed for microSD then it won't work. Similarly if you're trying to use microSDXC on a device only compatible up to microSDHC it also won't work.
So check your version of SD works with your device.

The memory card should not be affected by whether you have a carrier or not. However, the phone may not function if you don't at least have a dead SIM in it.

Did you format the micro sd card. If the card is new or used on another phone then you need to format it so that it can be read by the new phone.
