Unlocked cell phones?

What does it mean when a phone is "unlocked"? I'm looking into buying a new phone, but I'm tied to Fido. I don't like their phones, and I heard that I could buy a unlocked one and use it? Is there any other way to do this? Also, once I get the phone, what do I do?

unlocked cell phone means you can use the phone worldwide, without limitation of the carrier.

for example, a locked phone, you can only use it in a special carrier network, such as carrier A, and the phone can't be used in all other carrier's network; while an unlocked phone, you can use it in any carrier, not only Carrier A, but also carrier B, carrier C....etc.

Hope the above can help you.

On the contrary, it is not necessary for the phone to be locked. the term Unlocking' referencing GSM phones (SIM card phones), means to 'unlock' or un-attach that specific phone from its carrier. some carriers such as AT&T and T-Mobile lock their phones so that they cannot be used on any other carrier. Unlocking (or some may call it 'hacking') allows the user to use any SIM card from any carrier in their phone.

PS: you should not have to pay anything to unlock your phone, you only will need a little time and knowledge.
