Can I tether my Droid X to my Windows 7 laptop via usb? I know there is a 3G mobile Hotspot option but that costs $20 extra. I keep seeing this thing on my hardware properties about a Motorola Modem next to my Droid. Is it possible to USB Tether?

if you have 2.2 yes you can

to check current software go to settings>about phone and look for android version

if you have 2.1 you cant, if you have 2.2 you can go to setting again and than wireless & network>tethering and portable hotspot and select your option

i like wifi hotspot since i can be away from the phone and use it

windows 7 should thether automatically once you unable usb tether option on the phone

if you are doing wifi make sure to make it password protected

you can do it by selecting portable wifi hotspot setting>configure wifi hotspot

name you network, change the security to WPA2 PSK and enter et password below

hope this helps!

No, you can't. The previous answer may work with a Nexus 1, but not with the Droid X. When you try to use the connection you will go straight to a Verizon Wireless web page offering the service for an extra $20/month. Oddly, you get FREE tethering with the original Droid. I've tried it.

Yes, you can. You can download an app (try PDANet or EasyTether) that will allow you to tether via USB or bluetooth (but not W-Fi; you'll have to pay for that). These are both free apps, but neither support connections to secure websites (but they both have paid versions that do). Just be aware that this will violate the Terms of Service agreement with your carrier, who would like to charge you for tethering.
