birthday coming up - a mate suggested an upgrade, but i don't know what this is, ALSO does anybody know if i can take the mobile i have, - take it to the manufacturer and change it to a different phone by also paying a bit of money ( like an exchange? )

actually you just answered your own question...
take your phone into your service provider and ask their policy on upgrading.
Upgrading is basically switching your phone. Sometimes you pay a bit more, sometimes you don't. It all depends on your contract.

Basically an upgrade is buying a phone at the price of a new customer. BUT, you have to sign another contract. If you dont sign a contract you have to buy the phone full price which can get very expensive!

Alright. Well I have t-mobile & bascilly once you buy a phone & you keep it for how ever many years you get money (on your account) & you can spend that money on a new phone.
So let's say that the first time you sign up you get like a flip phone
or something & once you have it for a while, & you'll have like $200 to spend on a new phone. Like you don't have to pay $200, T-mobile does.
