3G means third generation mobile service. What you have now is 2G services all over India. 3G is now offered by BSNL/MTNL in India. Private operators will start their services by the end of the year, hopefully. In 3G you get Video calling service i.e you can see the photo of the called party and he/she will see your photo on their screen. You should have a 3G mobile phone to avail these services.

Apart from video calling you can have high speed data services (internet) on your phone or to a computer with a data cart which can be bought from BSNL by paying the necessary price.

If you have a BSNL SIM card you can convert it to 3G SIM by sending an SMS, details of which can be had from BSNL call centre.

Hi there!

3G is the third generation of wireless technology. It is a technology which gives you access to high speed internet which is not available in 2G which is available in INDIA now. With the GPRS which is available now the browsing sped is restricted to around 48 kbps and you will get a data transfer rate of about 4 to 6 KBPS, which is very slow if you are tring to download a file from the internet. With 3G you can get a data transfer rate of about 128 and 144 kbps (kilobits per second) for devices that are moving fast and 384 kbps for slow ones(like if you are in one location and not moving at a fast rate while browsing for ex. on a bike or when moving in a car etc.).

It is not only used for browsing the internet, you can use 3G connectivity for various multimedia features. you can make a video call and watch streaming videos, online gaming etc. on the move.

Coming to the cost its not too expensive. 3G services are already available from BSNL and the rates for browsing is less than 50 paise for each MB. Also there are several plans such as rental of Rs. 300 gives you a free data usage of about 500 MB ans after that you will be charged around 50 paise for each MB. This is excluding the voice calls that you make

Each minute of a video call will cost you around 30 paise to 50 paise depending on the tariff plan you opt for.

To avail the services apply for a SIM card from BSNL with 3G services or if you have a BSNL card with you, then you can opt for the 3G on the same. you will require address proof, id proof and passport size photographs (2 nos.) to get a new connection.

The handsets which are good include HTC, NOKIA and Iphone 3G. there are various handsets available but i suggest you go for a handset with 3G support of up to 7.2 MBPS cause you know as the time passes by technology improves and probably the speed on 3G can be improved in future. There are 3G enabled phones with 386 kbps too so choose wisely.

if you already have a handset which supports 3G then you can use the same. And if you are buying a new one and plan on making video calls then go for a phone which has a front video conferencing camera without which you cannot make video calls.

Faster connectivity, a host of value added services like Internet TV, video-on-demand, audio-video calls and high-speed data exchange will soon be a reality in India with one of the biggest auctions beginning today (April 9) for 3G spectrum.

The government hopes to garner around Rs 30,000-35,000 crore (Rs 300-350 billion) by selling 3G airwaves and broadband wireless access (BWA) spectrum through the auction that is expected to last up to three weeks.

There is, however, no time limit or deadline for the closing of the auction. The e-auction started at 9 a.m. and will remain open till 7.30 p.m. everyday till the process is complete.

The government has set base prices for all the 22 zones at Rs 3,500 crore (Rs 35 billion) and Rs 1,750 crore (Rs 17.50 billion) for BWA.
