I've finally managed to get my phone all rooted and I'm just about to install a custom ROM. Wasn't my ideal first option, but my service provider are taking too long to roll out 2.2 for my HTC wildfire.

So obviously I'm going to lose everything on my phone. Was wondering how is best to save all my SMS and contact information as I'd be in a real mess to lose it.

Google backups your contacts, just make sure this is selected: Menu >Settings > Accounts & Settings > your google account > Contacts sync is turned on.

Download SMS backup from the market, it stores them on your SD card and allows you to restore them however you like.

No, not unless you backed up your SMS's online or to your computer in some manner, or have an app like SMS Backup+ running doing automatic backups of all your text messages. Or Go SMS Pro makes backups to your SD card or online in some manner. No backups, no way to retrieve what you have deleted. I would suggest you download SMS Backup+ or a like app, and use it, so this will not happen in the future. Many such apps backup SMS and call logs to your Gmail account, under the default boxed SMS and Call Log, in the same order the messages came in with time stamps, contact info and phone numbers.

Perform a 'Nandroid' back up,

i belive this will backup EVERYTHING settings, sms, contacts so when you restore the system should be the same as when you performed the backup.

A quick google search will show you instructions,

Hope i helped ;)

I personally use Titanium backup. Just search in the app market for a contacts backup program, should be a lot of them.
