Question:
What new features would you wish manufacturers to include on the next cellphones?
2006-10-27 14:15:29 UTC
On the last ten years, cell phones have quickly improved. Nowadays, they include the most diverse functions, like photo and video cam, mp3 player, recorder, GPS, blue tooth, games, file transfer, text editors, Internet, e-mail and radio. What more can be invented to make them more useful?

How about a small explosive charge that goes off if a person ignores the person they are with in the restaurant so they can have a long conversation on the phone?

Or a phone that squirts paint in the ear of anyone who makes a call on the train and says, "HELLO! IT'S ME! I'M ON THE TRAIN!"

Or how about a ring tone filter? If someone's ringtone is really naff, the phone automatically runs away and throws itself in the nearest lake?

i would enjoy any of those things.

Simpler email implementation.

Text messages set up so that you can see what was a "reply" to what.

Mini-USB (some phones have it, it would be good if more did, it's a great way of transferring data AND charging the phone.

Would be good to see the old infra-red ports back, with built-in "learning remote" software to reduce the amount of rectangular plastic boxes in the house.

GPS; the tracker if not the big touchscreen, not just for knowing where you are but for knowing where the phone is when someone's nicked it.

Right, i'll have a phone with all that on it please, and all the stuff you mentioned. And a flashlight. And a toughened screen. And scratch-resistant body. Cheers!

1:I would like to see a built in securtiy alarm so when it is stolen it goes off just like a burgler alarm if anyone breaks in your home. When it is in our pocket or bag we secure lock it and have to punch a key to use it when stolen they do not know key so it goes off. Most theives will use a phone almost immediatly on stealing to see if it is pay as you go or contract.

2: Batteries that when charged up last that bit longer for goodness sake very annoying when runs out especialy when not long charged.

3: More choice on covers some are so boring you have no choice but to pimp your mobile!

4: More free tunes when we have just brought it.

5: My samsung has the most crap tunes for when I get a call I have had to buy my own and I have paid for it all on contract so bad if none of the ring tones are any good. Why cant you put on the great escape, james bond, ex factor or some of the more popular tunes.IF YOUR PHONE DID THIS HUGE SELLING POINT.

Well lets set the imagination free then..........

How about a mobile phone that properly uses GPS so that you can use it as a satnav in the car.

A phone that can project a laser keyboard onto the desk and you just type on the projected image.

A phone that has a built in projector. So if you want to watch a video or the tv or do a video call then you would just sit your mobile down and watch the projection on a wall or the desk. I guess any size larger than the phones screen would be decent, so postcard or even A4 size.

More common use of Wifi or even better - Wimax, high speed wireless broadband.

I'm sure Philips are developing some sort of flexible screen, so in the future we could have flipping, sliding, rotating and "scrolling" phones.

Can't imagine the batteries will last very long but hey,it's not me that has to solve the problem! I just have to enjoy playing!

I think that the battery life on all phones should be longer, more colourful (alot of phones are just one colour), surfing the Internet should be free, you should receive at least 3 free downloads a month, blue tooth also should be faster when sending files especially songs and should also search alot farther for other devices and cellphones should also have a secret locking device )maybe voice recognition) so only yourself can use the phone and this would also prevent theft.

That's about it really

I'd like a 'phone with a thumbprint reader and a secure encrypted unique identifier signal so I can bip it against the supermarket checkout with my thumb on the reader and have the groceries automatically be paid for out of my account. That way, I don't need a wallet anymore. Actually, hook the car keys into that sucker as well so I can start the car using my thumb-reading 'phone as well. Then all I have to do is use a photo of the missus as a screen saver and bingo, no more wallet - I only ever have to carry the 'phone!

Nothing, absolutely nothing, they are way to advanced to be used simply as phones, maybe if you went back a few five years or so, when texting was simple, and this weird texting language was only just starting, I've still got a Nokia 3610, I've had that since I was 16, and I'm now 21, as long as its practical, I don't want another phone! These days, mobile ohones are just fashion accesrories, not a nessesity when you've missed the last bus, or just out with friends.
2006-10-30 11:15:33 UTC
You should make simpler, cheaper phones for people who don't want the gizmos and gadgets. My parents can't get their heads round new phones and don't want to be bothered anyway. You would sell to a lot of the older generation by making simple phones that just dial out and receive calls - they only use them in emergencies anyway (like if the car breaks down in the middle of nowhere).

For myself, a proper camera that takes proper photos would be useful - the one I've got now doesn't focus or take decent pictures over any distance and is useless indoors. Calendars and organisers are also very useful. Really, I think they've gone about as far as they can go without getting silly.

Slick design, such as the Nokia 8800, then an outlook compatible calendar to synch the diary on the phone, and an MP3 player with normal headphone jack and 4 GIG of space to upload music.
2006-10-31 07:40:49 UTC
A longer battery life would be a must, I never use the camera or the mp3 on my phone so I'd sacrifice that for other facilities. Built in sat nav for cars would be a good idea or some better PC like facilities would be nice.
2006-10-31 03:07:56 UTC
What I would like is some sort of device similar to solar power built in, so that I don't run out of battery power during an important call!

This action would also benefit the environment in the long term.

If possible an option on the mobile phone to read out messages, which would help people who are visually impaired.

My no1 answer is keep it simple, a phone is a phone, not a t.v. camera, or a computer terminal, it is primarily for contacting people who are so distant shouting is out of the question. I have quite a load voice but I couldn't make myself heard over long distance. maybe with a text facility be cause one has to remember situations when talking on a mobile phone is out of the question. Texting is more sexy too!

things i cannot do without or things that could really help me on a daily basis, in this order:

1. 3g or better for videocalls and high internet speed (videocalls => at least one small camera)

2. touchscreen - usability

3. operating system that enables full featured software like the one i use on my pc ...(office suite & more)

4. lots of memory - 1gb internal memory at least

5. treking/hiking stuff - gps, altimeter, compass, thermometer

6. slim but very resitant case (rubber or other material)

all this should not be bigger then a MIO a710 or a Nokia N70

Notify me when you launch this device and i'll be the 1st to buy it :D

I'd actually like to see some really stylish looking phones with logically designed operating systems that actually have FEWER features on them. I don't really use video or MP3 - I would just like clear number storage, clear texting and a better calendar. The simpler phones out there tend to be really ugly - I want my phone to be slim and super stylish too.

Could one of them not come up with a phone design that looks great and where you choose which of the facilities/services you want, and the price goes accordingly? I suppose that would be too difficult/expensive - hey ho, that's what I'd really like.

I would love to have following new features on my mobile phone if possible.

1. Tazer ( I am not sure if it is the right spelling) - to prevent mobile phone thieves.

2.Ability to incorporate your swipe card details - say swipe card of your employment so that you can use it to access entry instead of using swipe card

3. Ability to use it as credit card - i dont know if it is a good idea

4.torch light to use in emergency

5.Pedometer

6.Calories burnt during exercise - so that we can use it to know how many we have burnt while using it to listen to music at the same time

7.Body mass ratio calculator

8. Water proof phone

9.Ability to use it as a car key or house key (should be optional)

10. Shaver- very useful for frequent travellers

a nice looking phone would be nice i think the designers should look towards the shapes and designs of top brand cars they are smooth sophisticated yet simple and stylish. Ive not seen a single phone id be willing to take a chunk out of my wages, and buy, maybe you guys could do bespoke phones over the net like the current trend with trainers and boots?

Most are far too complicated. Many people just want to use them occasionally or in an emergency. Start producing some really simple, inexpensive ones without all the gimmicks and gadgets that mobile phone companies think we all need.

Hmmm... a great quesiton. Mobiles can now integrate with the house, are like mini-laptops and have video/mp3/mp4/camera/flashlight included. Battery life is always an ongoing issue, but not our problem! How about a his/her alternative (without being sexist) but a pull out with some make-up, or a Swiss-Army knife add-on. I'd like mine to be the key to my house, the office and my car, so I would only have to remember my mobile. Oh, and a cig lighter, ideally Zippo style. Another item less to forget and leave at home!

A travelling rep mobile, including toothbrush, toothpaste, shaving foam and razor, and shoe-polish... and a contact lens case.

I want all the above in one mobile, and I want it to look like (and be worn like) a watch. But no thanks Casio... you've had your day!

As small as possible.

Camera lenses make phones too bulky - take the camera out and you can have a much smaller, lighter phone.

Also, they restrict where you can take a phone - camera-restricted areas are common in the Automotive industry (and presumably many other industries also).

Give me a small flip phone (no bigger than my current Samsung X450) with bluetooth and infra-red, but no camera, so I can carry it in my trouser pocket at all times, and I'd buy it tomorrow.

If you register your phone online with manufactuerer, then were able to disable it should it be stolen or disable certain functions.

This would mean even if a thief were able to 'unlock' a steolen phone to use a new network sim in it, it still would not work.

A chip that can connect to your VCR/DVDR so when you forget about your fave programme or a movie you can send it a text to start recording a certain channel. Or maybe to boil the kettle when you're on your way home!!!!!!!

And maybe a link to a security camera to be accessed by GPRS or something...

- Stop making them so blasted small !!!

- larger screen

- wrist / arm attachment (slot the phone onto an attchment that straps to your arm - a bit Dick Tracey & Blake's 7 but I think people will find it useful)

- combine it with a PDA style device, make it a phone / diary / computer
