updated my iphone 3gs and now i have lost everything?

so my sister encouraged me to update my iphone 3gs to the latest software. After hours and hours i finally have use of my phone back but now everything is gone! all my pictures, text messages and any settings that i have changed. this is really upsetting me and when i try and restore them it says backup failed. is there anything i can do???

i cant believe i have lost everything, i wish i could turn back time and never do it in the first place! :(
