Lots of questions here. 1st thing to switch your service to your new phone takes a simple call to sprint and they will switch it. Remember that your pics, vids and numbers will not be switched over.

Ebay - You need to buy a Sprint phone, they will tell you its for sprint. The most important thing is to check to make sure that the ESN is clean and able to be activated. Get the number from them first and call sprint to make sure that it is clear. If it isn't you bought a paper weight.

You need to be able to trust the seller, but Ebay is pretty good about protecting the customers about phones. I stopped selling on Ebay because of the restrictions they can put on a phone seller. It could have been a real hassle as a seller.

I hope this helps. I have been a cell phone and accessory dealer for many years.

The first thing you need to do is make sure it is a Sprint phone. If it doesnt have the sprint logo on it then it will not work with sprint service unless it has been unlocked and even then its not a sure thing. Alot of unlocked phones will not be covered buy service providers as there network is equipped for phones from other networks. If your purchasing a sprint phone from ebay then all you need to do is call sprint customer service and let them know you wish to swap your number to a new phone. They will ask you some security questions to verify you are the account holder or authorized to make changes to the account. Then they will ask you for a few numbers usually located on the phone underneath the battery. These numbers at vitally important to turning on your new phone mess up one number and your phone wont work and have to be sent in to be reprogrammed. All these things the customer service rep from sprint will walk you through.

Now my advice would be to go to a third party retailer such as radioshack or best buy and see if they have any deals on refurbished phones, your still going to pay between 100-400$ depending on what phone you choose, but its deffinetly cheaper than purchasing a new phone at a retail price ranging from 300-1200$. The cheapest route of course is to opt for the insurance sprint offers for 7.00$ per month. If you had this insurance you could get your phone replaced in 5 days or less and it would only cost you $50.00. Option two is to keep your old phones everytime you upgrade in the event you lose or break your new phone you can re-activate your old phone.
