Question:
iPhone Data Usage Questions?
2010-01-30 18:24:45 UTC
i just got an iphone today. and the data plan is making me feel concious as to how much data im using as it uses it up pretty quickly.
so i have a few questions.

the iphone comes with a "Youtube" app... when i am connected to 3G, and use this app, does this count towards the data usage? Or no?
Also, when I am talking in Yahoo messenger, and someone sends me a picture, does accepting this picture/file transfer also add/count towards data usage? Or no?
When I press 'safari", then exit by clicking the Home button... is safari still running? if so, does this count towrads data usage? Or no?
When I use Facebook, which is a free app, does this count towards data usage?
How about Skype?
Basically I'm asking questions about any apps that are "Free", but need internet connection.

Thanks.

The I-phone data plan is unlimited, so you can relax...

1."Youtube" requires internet because it requires constant updating. So, yes.

2. Again, this requires constant updating by just running a Yahoo! Messenger chat, or any other Instant Message, Social networking site, or situation where people download or type new things constantly.

3. It immediatly stops running when you click the home button, so no.

4. Yes, because it takes internet to show people's current profile, instant message, status, photos, etc.

5. Yes. (see answer 4)

6. There are tons of apps that are free. Basicly, If the app requires updating or if it changes a lot based on others, then it's running internet.

BUT PLEASE READ THE FALLOWING CAREFULLY::

THE iPHONE DATA PACKAGE IS SET TO WHERE YOU MUST PAY AN EXTRA $40.00 PER MONTH NO MATTER HOW MUCH YOU USE DATA. EVEN IF YOU DONT USE IT AT ALL, ITS STILL FORTY DOLLARS. SO YOU MAY AS WELL RELAX AND JUST USE, USE, USE. BECAUSE THERES NO LIMIT, IT WONT CHANGE, ITS FORTY!

Yes, you're using their 3G network to connect to the YouTube servers, so it counts toward your usage. Generally picture messages, text messages, and the like don't count.

The iPhone doesn't multitask, so when you press the home key, that app is no longer "running". The only exceptions are e-mail and the like, as they will automatically connect to the network by default after a set time to check for new messages. The cost of the app has nothing to do with network usage. Many free apps use the 3G network to operate.

Basically, ANY app that connects you to the internet counts as data usage. A good idea, in order to save yourself stress and frustration, is to upgrade to the unlimited data plan for $29.99/month.
