I have heard that Nokias have the best range, but other phones, like Sanyo, Samsung, or Motorola have longer talk/standby times
etc. I don't care much about video/camera capability. MP3 would be nice, but not necessary. I am more interested in a good PHONE. I want to be able to connect quickly, power up quickly, and hear the conversation.

I would suggest you stick with one of the basic Nokia models, without all bells and whistles. You want to use your phone for talking, which Nokias are famous for, not for listening to mp3 ( this is what mp3 players are for ), and not for making pictures ( they would be ugly comparing to any decent digital camera ).

As for the longer talk/standby time, often extended batteries are available for the phone. Don't choose a tiny phone, it is easier to lose and the battery won't last long since it is smaller than others.

Depends what you rely on... if you use e-mail, get a pda or smart phone. If you want the best coverage, go with verizon or t-mobile. Stay away from nextel because they drop calls all the time. Nokia's are ok, but usually they are cheaply made. Motorola has been around for a long time and have nice deliverable warrenties on their phones.

Out of the ones you mentioned, Motorola is the way to go.
