I currently have the ATT unlimited charter plan, so the SIM card is ATT. I am evaluating changing to Cingular SIM and getting a different plan but have mixed signals from salespeople. One says the ATT plan is the best on the market, but I have to get an ATT phone. The other says that I need a Cingular plan because I can access many more towers and will therefore have less dropoffs. What is the truth, and what is the best plan and phone for my money? I don't want to pay roaming charges or be worried about minutes(I am spoiled at $99 plus tax a month). Also Bluetooth that might work with a GPS system might be cool. But in a convertible? Sorry, lots of questions from a non-techy.

Actually, AT&T Mobility is the official name now of what used to be Cingular Wireless. AT&T DID NOT BUY CINGULAR WIRELESS. If you all remember, Cingular (Officially Bell South & SBC) aquired AT&T & it's subsidiary wireless company named AT&T wireless. If you think AT&T purchased Cingular you have it backwards. Cingular purchased AT&T which split up its children company over the years. We are now merging everything back under one name of the New AT&T (aka AT&T mobility).

In reference to your charter plan, yes, it is the best plan on the market. The cell phone towers that you can access have nothing to do with Cingular's rate plans being better. You get access to the same coverage as any Cingular rate plan customer, and I would keep your plan if at all possible. the only hitch that you may encounter is that if you ever need a new phone, you will either have to find an old AT&T wireless capable phone, get an unbranded phone (unlocked), or switch your rate plan and get a Cingular branded phone (although we are rebranding the phones to AT&T).

I didn't know ATT even existed anymore. I used to have thier service, but down here they have been bought out by Cingular. I have a Cingular phone, Motorola V557 model. It has a SIM card. I actually like it, it is a flip phone, fairly durable (compared to razrs) and takes really good pictures, too. All the TV commercials advertise Cingular as the new ATT. I don't know what packages they offer, but you can probably check it out online at their website.

Cingular is no more, AT&T wireless aquired Cingular. AT&T Mobility, LLC d/b/a Cingular Wireless is the wholly owned wireless subsidiary of AT&T Inc.

Actually, SBC aquired AT&T wireless, then used the Name 'The New AT&T to merger with Bell South which Cingular was its wireless arm renamed from Bell South Mobility. The New AT&T is a name only, the company behind it is SBC. AT&T corp still exists as a long distance carrier seperate from all this just owned now by SBC.
