Okay, so what you need to do essentially is convert your .mp3 file to a .m4r file.

Go to download.com

Search for Xilisoft iPhone Ringtone Maker.

Download the free one.

Load your .mp3 into the program.

Cut/convert the .mp3 to .m4a (If you can get it to go directly to .m4r that would be better.)

If it cannot go directly to .m4r, just manually change it.

Sync this to your iPhone and you are done.

Audacity is surely the best free music maker and is great for making music.

I got it for free here : http://j.mp/Whu1OdIt's perfect even for beginners because the software is really intuitive ad easy to use but at the same time it has really advanced functions for more experienced users.

It's a program that I definitely reccomend!

download the Myxer app. It lets you create a ringtone using an existing song on your phone. It then tells you to connect to itunes to retrieve it. they have a video on how to do this. Just make sure you have tones enabled on itunes so that they'll sync onto the iphone when you make your ringtone.

The following link is a fairly detail account of how to do this.

http://www.gottabemobile.com/2011/10/26/ios-5-how-to-create-custom-ringtones-and-alerts-for-the-iphone/

Also there is a program called Audacity (http://audacity.sourceforge.net/) that is free and allows you to edit tracks. Simply crop the song where you want it for your tone and save the file as a .wav (WAVE). Then add the wave file to your itunes and follow the steps in the tutorial link to convert the file to a ring tone.

I hope this helps.

*ONLY IF YOU HAVE MAC*

You should have 'GarageBand' on your Mac. Open it up and select iPhone ringtone. Record voice or what ever. You can even open up a file. Then sync it on to your phone via iTunes.

I Think there's an app for it

I have the app called RMaker. All you do is open the song from your phone that you want to make a ringtone, edit it how you want it, and click the save button. You then plug your phone into the computer you sync your phone with. Go to the tab under your phone in iTunes that says apps.... scroll towards the bottom, and you'll see the list of ringtones you've made with that app.... Drag them into your "Tones" section on your computer and Sync! :) Voila. It's not too complicated and the app comes with instructions on how to help you.
