LG have not promised the update. The LG Optimus 2X may never get the official ICS upgrade. You may have to rely on the hacking community. The upgrade should improve performance, add some features, and fix some bugs. There is no guarantee that it will fix all problems though.

I did precisely what you go with to do very very nearly 1year in the past. It does not improve the Android version. It only does some little insignificant updates. once I put in the LG software on my pc and as much as date the drivers, to this date i'm nevertheless working Android V 2.3.4. on my 2X. I even have by no means had the excitement of updating my Android version because of the fact of ways badly LG has dealt with this telephone. I even have been waiting a three hundred and sixty 5 days for a million and who's typical with how long it is going to likely be till now it is released everywhere else. final time i purchase an LG product. shame on LG for treating the 'worlds first twin middle telephone', which they enjoyed to declare plenty like a chew of airborne dirt and airborne dirt and mud. A waste of my time. i'm hoping lg is going bankrupt (:

Ya i would recommend Rooting your phone and installing a custom Rom for ICS. BUT ONLY if u think u can do it. Its hard to mess up but its still possible. And it will erase all of your data. Just back up your data with a computer. Plug it in and Copy and paste Everything that is in your SD card and INTERNAL storage. But make sure you contacts are backed up as well. (Best option to back up contacts with is google). Export your contacts to the SD card, then drag the "V-Card" file out of the SD card and onto your computer desktop. Then sign into google and go to your contacts and look for an option that says "Import contacts". Then choose the VCard file. I would also recommend waiting until there is a JELLY BEAN ROM for your phone. (android 4.1)
