There is a jailbreak out now by using redsn0w but it may be a tethered jailbreak which means you have to connect your device to a computer and run redsn0w everytime you have to reboot your device. It depends if your 3GS is an old or new bootrom.

The instructions with a video are here:

Keep checking this site for the latest updates on jailbreaking and unlocks. A new jailbreak/unlock is expected to be released before xmas.

It also gives you everything you need including jailbreaks, unlocks, installous, firmwares etc etc

Hope that helps.

Good day Sir/Madam:

It is always wise to back up your device with iTunes first before jailbreaking. Or you may lose important information during jailbreaking.

Wish that helps

To jailbreak the iphone 3GS on 4.2.1, follow this:

http://www.redmondpie.com/jailbreak-ios-4.2.1-iphone-4-3gs-3g-ipad-ipod-touch-with-redsn0w-0.9.6b4-guide/

However, if you need to unlock, that's a whole different story. You have to flash an iPad baseband which completely voids warranty, and there's no turning back once done. I did it fine with my beat up 3G 8GB. So if that's the case, disregard that link above, and follow this one:

http://www.techsliver.com/pc-users-unlock-guide-iphone-3gs-3g-redsn0w-096b5/

Both are about the same difficulty.
